President Trump of the United States had officialy requested at the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum to loan a painting of Vincent van Gogh. It is customary for a president to loan an artwork to hang in the White House, but his request was denied by the museum. The curator Nancy Spector offered, instead of the Van Gogh, a work of the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan: a toiletbowl of eighteen-carat gold.
The work of Cattelan is a reaction to the unequal distribution of wealth in America. That’s why the title of the work is ‘America’. The bowl is probably worth about 800.000 euro and, when exhibited, it was being used by visitors of the museum. About 100.000 people have answered nature’s call on the toilet.
The White House has not responded yet on the offer of the Trump-critical Spencer.
